On Tuesday, August 25, the United States temporarily suspended its visa processing program. The reason given by the Department of State is that embassy and consular staff needed training regarding some of the new rules that will apply to both visas and green cards. They paused visa processing while this training took place.
To a large degree, the new rules revolve around whether or not someone would need government benefits if they were permitted to live in the United States. These benefits were often provided for immigrants in the past, but the current government has been restricting travel to the country and instituting new rules to prevent government benefits from being given to certain immigrants.
This is similar to how, at the beginning of 2026, the government paused the processing of green cards for those from 75 specific countries. Even people who were already in the United States and had applied for a green card may not be approved if it appeared that they would receive certain types of government benefits.
Visa interviews have been canceled
In many cases, reports note that worldwide immigrant visa interviews have now been canceled due to this pause, and people in other countries are being prevented from entering the United States in the first place. Their visas are not being approved at this time.
These reports also note that it is unclear exactly when the processing of immigrant visas will resume. Some have noted that this may mean that certain visas could go to waste and will not be issued by September 30, which was the focus prior to this pause.
Changes to immigration laws, especially when it comes to visa and green card processing, can certainly complicate the process for immigrants. It is important for them to understand exactly what changes have taken place, what new rules may be used and what legal options they have.
