Once you reside in the U.S. for five years as a lawful permanent resident you may want to seek U.S. citizenship. One way to do this is through naturalization. There are certain eligibility requirements that lawful permanent residents must fulfill in order to obtain U.S. citizenship.
Age and residency requirements
Lawful permanent residents can file a Form N-400, Application for Naturalization if they are age 18 or older. In addition, they must have continually resided in the U.S. as a lawful permanent resident for five years or more going back from the date the application for naturalization was filed. In addition, they must have been physically present in the U.S. for 30 months or more out of the five years they resided in the U.S. They also must have resided at least three months in the state that has jurisdiction over the place in which they reside.
Character requirements
In addition to age and residency requirements, a lawful permanent resident also must meet certain character requirements to become a naturalized citizen. Specifically, they must be able to show they are of good moral character and have been as such for five years or more going back from the date the application for naturalization was filed. They also must be able to show they follow and respect the U.S. Constitution.
Other requirements
There are other requirements that must be met to become a naturalization. Many (but not necessarily all) applicants must have a basic fluency in the English language. They also must know of and understand the fundamentals of U.S. history and U.S government. Finally, they must take an Oath of Allegiance to the United States.
